I have just installed pymedia in Debian. pymedia 1.3.5 and pygame 1.6 so I could use the patch in the installation tutorial (http://66.159.221.186/pygame-1.6-overlay.patch.gz). I didn't receive any errors on any of the install sections. I also had all the requisites except MP3LAME for pymedia and FONT and IMAGE for pygame. These seem like they're not critical for playing videa. Correct me though if I'm wrong.

The aplayer.py tutorial works fine.
When I try to run vplayer.py, it isn't happy. A black window pops up for a second then goes away. the output is:

Quote:
jeff@debian:~/code$ python vplayer.py clip1.avi
Main video loop has started.
({'index': 0, 'block_align': 0, 'type': 0, 'frame_rate_base': 1000, 'height': 272, 'channels': 0, 'width': 640, 'length': 0, 'sample_rate': 0, 'frame_rate': 25000, 'bitrate': 0, 'id': 17}, {'index': 1, 'block_align': 1, 'type': 1, 'frame_rate_base': 1, 'height': 0, 'channels': 2, 'width': 0, 'length': 3, 'sample_rate': 44100, 'frame_rate': 25, 'bitrate': 127992, 'id': 7})
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "vplayer.py", line 218, in processAudioFrame
self.snd= sound.Output( afr.sample_rate, 2, sound.AFMT_S16_LE )
SoundError: Cannot create sound object. Error text is: 16, Device or resource busy at OPEN

The error (from Traceback till OPEN) is repeated many times. at the end, it says:
Quote:

Traceback (most recent call last):

raise player.err[ 0 ]
pymedia.audio.sound.SoundError: Cannot create sound object. Error text is: 16, Device or resource busy at OPEN

I get the same error when running an MPEG file.

This may be an ALSA vs. OSS problem. I'm very new to python and haven't messed with OSS for a while. could I still be using alsa even if aplayer.py runs successfully?

Let me know if you need more info. Thanks for your help! I'm excited to use pymedia for a project.
