I've had issues with my Grom Audio USB2 module in a 05 VW Passat since installing it.

First, I'm using the USB drive almost exclusively. The USB drive occasionally fails to restart the music from where it left off. I end up disconnecting and reconnecting the USB drive, often several times, before the music starts again. Not a big problem, but really annoying.

Now, the USB2 module doesn't appear to be working. The USB drive was playing music normally (Engine Off). Then I cranked & started the engine and then radio could no longer can find the USB2 module. Tonight I'm going to troubleshoot the problem so that's all the information I have at the moment.

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions to improve the operation or is this "Normal" for the Grom USB2's?

I started with the Grom Audio USB stick. I've recently switched to a Transcend Jet Flash USB stick and that one appears to be working better.

As far as the USB2 not responding, I had to unplug the USB2 from the radio and then reconnect the module to get it working again. And thanks I'll try to contact Grom Audio support.

Welcome to the club. GROM has not fixed this but I have been "assured" they are working on it.

Make sure you have grounded black wire properly.
Also make sure to install the latest firmware.

The black ground wire to the radio chassis is good and tight.

I've tried the firmware update as per the Grom Audio website and it a) didn't download or b) made no difference. Is there anyway to tell what firmware version is loaded into the USB2?

I almost forgot. I've been playing with the GROM Audio USB stick on my PC and having problems with it on the PC as well. It would appear that my Grom Audio USB stick is bad and caused my initial USB problem. Now, if we just had a solution to the cranking issue.

What you mean it would not download ?
Can you clarify ?
Here is the FAQ how to check your version and make sure the upload went through:

I bought the USB2 module & associated hardware about 6 weeks ago. Between vacation & work I am just now getting to play with it.

Sorry, I tried the download following the instructions on the GROM Audio download section. The LED on the USB stick only blinked for a second or two which was not much different than normally plugging in the USB stick. I expected "several seconds" to be longer than that so I assumed it didn't download. Keep in mind that I was attempting the download with a GROM Audio USB stick that is suspect. I haven't tried it with my current USB stick.

And I just plan missed the USB2 FAQ section somehow. I'll take a look and see what build number I have however I don't know what the build number I started with.

Try this firmware:
http://gromaudio.com/downloads/firmware/gromusb2_vag_18.hex
Make sure you follow update procedure:
Quote:
* Rename file to gromusb2.hex
* Put the file on a USB stick into the root of the drive (as shown below)
* Turn on the ignition and attach the stick to the device
* The light on a stick should blink for several seconds and then stay solid
* The firmware update is done. Ready to use!
* Turn ignition off and then on for stereo to recognize the new firmware
* Make sure you remove gromusb2.hex from the stick to avoid unwanted firmware change later !

I loaded the new firmware a couple of days ago and here's my take:

The USB stick operation seems to work better even with the suspect Grom Audio USB stick. However, this morning the Grom Audio USB stick got hung up again so I switched back to the Transcend JetFlash. Solution: Stay with the Transcend JetFlash.

The cranking problem is still an issue. I've only tried the sequence once and locked up the USB2. I had to disconnect the USB2 from the radio and reconnect it to get things working again. This is not a pleasant fix because I have to pull the radio each time this happens.

Here's an update to the USB stick operation. It's better but still occasionally gets hung up and it doesn't matter which USB stick.

The last two mornings, the Transcend JetFlash hung when up when I started the radio. The first time in a few days. This morning I did try something new. Instead of disconnecting the USB stick, I switched playback modes to ipod, to aux, and back to USB. The USB stick started playing again.

My best guess is it happens two out of ten tries. One try being after I start the car. It appears to happen only when I shut the car off and restart it. I can switch between radio and USB anytime on my drive and even turn the radio off & on just as long as I don't stop the engine.
