What is the best way to install the 2.6 kernel on my new 512 DiskOnChip drive? Should I download the kernel and all the patches and burn it to a CD, but then how would it boot? Please help a newbie out...

Just take pycar's ISO image for instance and change the kernel. Don't forget to compile all your drivers into kernel though.
In fact you will need initrd image and custom script which will mount all the drives and stuff.
